Tips for making your own own floor, window and tile cleaners, can be found on the site www.creativehomemaking.com and www.thriftyfun.com. Some are geared towards saving money – e.g. substituting bubble bath for the more expensive liquid hand soap – others allow you to avoid using and storing toxic chemicals in your home.
Examples
  • General purpose floor cleaner: 1/3 cup of Borax with one gallon of warm water, then add one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon of ammonia.
  • Wood floor cleaner: 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of vegetable oil.
  • Shower cleaner, mix 1/4 cup of Lysol or another concentrated cleaner with a half cup of isopropyl alcohol and water.
  • To clean chrome, used toothpaste or crumpled up aluminum foil.
  • To clean glass with plain white vinegar.
  • For dusting, reuse dryer sheets.

Reminder: Never mix ammonia and bleach, which can create a harmful, potentially lethal gas.
